DARe Live Level 4
Clinical Strategies to Address Complex Trauma

Summary

When encountered in early life, terrifying or dangerous circumstances can contribute to a disorganized attachment adaptation. Children, and later on, adults may develop affect regulation issues including poor social skills, attention/learning/developmental deficits and/or a lack of coherency. In some cases, a person may become angry, aggressive with others or exhibit the same out-of-control/controlling, chaotic, scary or scared behaviors they experienced with their perpetrators.

The complex, wounding relationship that exists between victims and their perpetrators can present unique challenges for therapeutic professionals in clinical practice. For example, the intensity of an invasive sexual or violent encounter can create strong, disabling relational issues for victims––resulting in a loss of differentiation, a coupling of rage and powerlessness, or even a need to re-enact the victim and/or perpetrator identity.

As therapists, we need a practical, integrated, comprehensive and dynamic approach that can be used effectively (and consistently) to help clients address trauma and rediscover secure attachment...even with our most difficult cases.

In this 3-day live, online training, you will learn how attachment theory can be aligned and integrated with various clinical practices, perspectives and modalities to address the challenges of complex trauma--including disorganized attachment adaptations and victim-perpetrator abuse dynamics.

Through a blend of blend of didactic presentations, demonstrations and experiential exercises, you'll gain important therapeutic skills that help you and your clients alleviate unnecessary suffering, return to a sense of safety, promote empowerment and restore a connection to the self and others.

What will we cover?

  • Discover how healing the power wound can allow clients to return to their core intactness as they rediscover and embody secure attachment.
  • Learn how to work with power wounds by separating attachment needs from the need to self-protect.
  • Learn how to identify and recognize both the primary and secondary attachment systems so you can use the relational field to excavate a healthy relational matrix and create empowerment, trust, protection, safety, connection and clarity in a therapeutic setting.
  • See and practice corrective experiences and learn how to install the Protective Ally and Competent Protector.
  • Learn how to reverse immobilization and a need for dissociation, including how to reintroduce threat safely without triggering additional responses.
  • Deepen your understanding of boundary rupture and repair, so you can restore a sense of safety in the relational field.
  • Explore how to work with victim-perpetrator dynamics and help disorganized attachment adaptations recover from the devastation of abuse.

This training will be held ONLINE using Zoom. All necessary Zoom information––as well as login credentials to the learning portal where you can access additional resource materials, slide handouts and recordings of the training (for 60 days) will be emailed to students before the training.

Date/Time

Friday, November 7
 - Sunday, November 9
9 am
 - 5 pm
 MT (each day)
Prerequisite: DARe Level 1: Fundamentals of Attachment Style
While you don’t have to be in the DARe Certificate Program to enroll, students should be licensed practitioners with an active practice––and have completed DARe Level 1 before enrolling in DARe Level 3 or 4.
Because the Level 1 training has already been offered twice this year, as an alternative, you may purchase the Introduction to Attachment Styles pre-recorded course to help you satisfy the prerequisite. We strongly encourage you to complete this recorded, self-paced training before the beginning of the first class. However, please note that if you are enrolled in the DARe Certificate Program, the Introduction to Attachment styles will not count towards completion of your Level 1 DARe requirement.

Who Is This For?

Beginning to advanced clinicians and therapists who want to explore the origins of attachment system dynamics so they can apply attachment focused skills, corrective experiences, interventions and strategies tosupport and restore secure attachment.

Learning Objectives

  • List three attachment concerns when working with the disorganized attachment adaptation.
  • List three strategies for self-care in a therapeutic setting when working with clients with a disorganized attachment adaptation.
  • Describe three techniques to repair ruptured boundaries.
  • Demonstrate how to uncouple two major psycho-biological instinctive drives that become interrupted and interwoven to block the health and functioning (of both systems)––the need to attach and the need to survive.
  • Explain how to create appropriate therapeutic empathy and avoid triggering disintegration, especially when empathy might be interpreted as intrusive (e.g. in cases of sadistic abuse).
  • Demonstrate how to excavate, initiate, and complete defensive orienting responses (such as fight, flight or freeze) by discharging ANS over-activation.
  • Identify and demonstrate how to resolve a stuck relational approach/avoidance cycle.
  • Describe two ways to differentiate victim-perpetrator fusion and release toxic interjects to restore inherent core intactness.
  • Explain two ways that high arousal states caused by dissociation are discharged.
  • Describe two common examples of Savior, Incompetent Proptector and Perpetrator Trauma Transference and Counter-Transference––and how they may affect the therapeutic relationship.
  • List three steps to install a Competent Protector.
  • Identify at least one way to restore the missing resource of relative safety (and sense of protection).
  • List three ways to maintain the client/therapist alliance.
  • Identify three steps in the corrective experience for an encapsulated child or trauma state that has not moved forward in time––and is still affecting the client (as if it were in the current moment).
