Neurobiology, Attachment & Secure Relationships

Summary

Discover how the link between brain development and early attachment experiences can serve as an important clinical resource for healing and transformation in adult relationships.

This 3-day online training gives you a thorough understanding of how neurobiology relates to the attachment system. Because we are genetically hardwired, neurobiological beings––we are continually sculpted, shaped and reshaped by our experiences. And because we are also born with the innate drive and capacity to bond and attach at birth, our brains are shaped by our interactions with the world and the people in our lives. Our neurobiology forms the template that determines how we explore and interact with our environment, while the environment also shapes those same neural structures.

Through a blend of didactic presentations, demonstrations and experiential exercises, you'll learn concrete strategies and a more precise, efficient framework that helps form and shape new––more resilient and adaptive––neural pathways that promote healing from unresolved trauma and early attachment wounds.

What will we cover?

  • Learn how an understanding of neurobiology can help you recognize and identify insecure attachment behaviors and patterns in adult relationships.
  • Get a complete overview of how the autonomic nervous system develops and functions.
  • Learn which types of clinical interventions and corrective exercises can contradict the past and shift painful memories to move yourself and clients towards a healthier, secure attachment system.
  • The role neurobiology plays in the development in both language and attachment––and what occurs as the brain tries to communicate in an insecure attachment adaptation.
  • Learn how to track and regulate your own arousal and activation when working with clients, so you have a better capacity to stay attuned to your clients' emotional needs.

See actual cases and exercises in action, so your presence and practice secure attachment, activate attunement and connection, and support any attachment style to help them feel safe and seen.

This training will be held ONLINE using Zoom. All necessary Zoom information––as well as login credentials to the learning portal where you can access additional resource materials, slide handouts and recordings of the training (for 60 days) will be emailed to students before the training.

 MT (each day)
Prerequisite: DARe Level 1: Fundamentals of Attachment Style
While you don’t have to be in the DARe Certificate Program to enroll, students should be licensed practitioners with an active practice––and have completed DARe Level 1 before enrolling in DARe Level 3 or 4.
Because the Level 1 training has already been offered twice this year, as an alternative, you may purchase the Introduction to Attachment Styles pre-recorded course to help you satisfy the prerequisite. We strongly encourage you to complete this recorded, self-paced training before the beginning of the first class. However, please note that if you are enrolled in the DARe Certificate Program, the Introduction to Attachment styles will not count towards completion of your Level 1 DARe requirement.

Who Is This For?

Beginning to advanced clinicians and therapists who want to explore the origins of attachment system dynamics so they can apply attachment focused skills, corrective experiences, interventions and strategies tosupport and restore secure attachment.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the age that implicitly memory becomes encoded––and describe one way in which we can access this memory in adulthood.
  • Explain two ways therapists can interrupt the associative cortex function to enable new, supportive experiences that promote healing from early childhood trauma for their clients.
  • Identify one basic understanding of the limbic system that occurs when a client has an early memory, which to them feels like it is "present, or in the now." Explain how to apply one one corrective experiencing using the DARe framework to slow and integrate this memory.
  • List two descriptive markers for the language style of each attachment adaptation: secure, avoidant, ambivalent and disorganized.
  • Explain the importance of right-brain (client) to right-brain (therapist's intervention) communication during clinical sessions––and give one reason why it is necessary to create this connection in a therapeutic setting.
  • When working with a client, identify and explain possible outcomes to a "Still Face Exercise;" also, identify two possible markers for distress and two markers for regulation.
  • List three reasons why it is important to teach clients with low facial expression how to increase their vagal tone and range of expression.
  • Explain and give two reasons why it is important for a therapist to understand how the polyagal system works in our bodies.
  • From an attachment perspective, identify the key reason why role reversal between parent and child is one of the markers for insecure attachment.
  • Describe one corrective experience you can use to facilitate secure attachment for the ambivalent attachment adaptation.
  • Through the lens of a healthy attachment system, describe two reasons why neuroplasticity allows us to shift painful memories into new, lived experiences.
