Six Foundational Training Modules taught by Diane Poole Heller PhD—expert in trauma and attachment therapy

Each module is broken into short, focused lessons, making complex aspects of grief accessible and clinically relevant. Across more than 5 hours of structured teaching, you’ll explore the core dynamics of grief across a range of experiences—from sudden loss and mass tragedy to divorce, illness, and disenfranchised grief.

Six Clinical Demonstration & Application Sessions

In these extended sessions (~90 minutes each), Diane brings the material to life through in-depth teaching and real client demonstrations.

As she works through each case, Diane offers ongoing clinical commentary and debrief—clarifying how to track moment-to-moment experience, orient to the client’s nervous system, and respond with precision.

Expert Conversations + Live Q&A

Accompanying each module, Diane is joined by leading voices in grief work to explore key topics in greater depth—from suicide loss and grieving children to post-traumatic growth and meaning-making. Each hour-long conversation offers a broader clinical perspective, alongside a recorded Q&A where experts respond to real questions from practitioners.

Private Course Portal with Lifetime Access

Includes video recordings, audio, transcripts, slide handouts, and supporting resources—so you can revisit the material at your own pace and return to specific topics whenever they’re most relevant.

Why take this course?

Learn powerful and effective techniques directly from Dr. Heller…

Grief and loss are not limited to the death of a loved one. They can emerge in response to divorce, illness, sudden disruption, or the accumulation of smaller, often unrecognized losses. In many cases, grief shows up indirectly—through withdrawal, agitation, hopelessness, or a loss of meaning—rather than as something clearly named.

It’s almost inevitable that these experiences will enter the therapy room. Yet many clinicians find themselves underprepared for the ways grief actually presents in practice. Without a clear framework, it can be difficult to know how to track what’s unfolding, how to stay with the experience without overwhelming the client, or how to support movement when the process feels stuck or unclear.

Grief work is rarely linear. It may involve shock, fragmentation, longing, anger, or numbness—often shifting rapidly, or coexisting in ways that are hard to organize. Some forms of grief go unrecognized or unsupported altogether, particularly in cases of disenfranchised loss, where there is little external validation or space to mourn.

This training offers a comprehensive exploration of how grief is held and expressed across a range of contexts—from mass trauma and suicide loss to divorce, chronic illness, and the loss of imagined futures. Through a somatic and attachment-informed lens, you’ll learn how to recognize different grief patterns, track moment-to-moment experience, and respond in ways that support integration over time.

Rather than focusing on grief as a set of stages or concepts, this course emphasizes how to work with grief as it actually unfolds in the body and in relationship—so you can meet your clients with greater clarity, steadiness, and clinical precision.

What you’ll learn?

In this comprehensive on-demand training, you’ll learn how to…

Here’s what’s in the training curriculum…

Session 1

Working with Shock Points

This module explores how shock shapes the early experience of grief, and how it can disrupt a client’s ability to process and integrate loss. You’ll learn how to recognize shock responses and support stabilization in the aftermath of sudden or overwhelming events, using practical interventions that help restore regulation and support integration over time.

Session 2

Mass Tragedies Part 1

This module explores how large-scale and collective loss impacts the nervous system, shaping responses such as hyperactivation, dissociation, and survivor’s guilt. Drawing on footage from Diane’s Surviving Columbine documentary, you’ll examine how trauma unfolds in real time—and how to work with the far-reaching effects of overwhelming events.

You’ll learn how to recognize and respond to fight, flight, and freeze responses in the aftermath of tragedy, and apply practical interventions to support safe processing and integration of traumatic grief.

Session 3

Mass Tragedies Part 2

Building on the foundations of acute trauma response, this module explores the longer-term and wider-reaching impacts of mass tragedy. You’ll examine how ongoing exposure—through media, collective attention, and repeated reminders—can shape and prolong traumatic stress responses over time.

The module also explores trauma bonding, the role of anniversaries in reactivating grief, and how individuals and communities begin to make meaning in the aftermath of large-scale loss. Together, these perspectives offer a broader understanding of how tragedy continues to live on—and how healing can gradually take shape.

Session 4

Disenfranchised and Hidden Grief

This module explores forms of grief that are often unrecognized, unsupported, or invalidated—both socially and within relationships. You’ll learn how disenfranchised grief can shape a client’s experience, particularly when there is no clear permission or space to mourn.

The module also addresses “secret grief”—losses that remain unspoken or hidden—and how this can complicate processing and integration over time. You’ll explore how to create conditions where these experiences can be safely acknowledged, and how meaning can begin to emerge when grief is finally given space and recognition.

Session 5

Divorce and Separation

This module explores the complex grief that accompanies divorce and separation—not only the loss of a relationship, but the loss of shared identity, future expectations, and a sense of belonging. You’ll examine how these experiences can shape self-concept, often requiring a process of redefining the self in the aftermath of relational rupture.

The module also addresses the emotional landscape of divorce, including loneliness, self-care, and the pull toward negative or self-critical patterns. You’ll learn how to support clients through this transition, helping them process grief while building stability and a renewed sense of direction.

Session 6

Long-Term Illness

This module explores the unique challenges of grief in the context of long-term illness, where loss is often gradual, uncertain, and ongoing. You’ll examine anticipatory grief, along with common responses such as blame, denial, and emotional complexity as clients navigate prolonged periods of change and uncertainty.

The module also addresses how grief can shape relationships over time—both straining and deepening connection—and how to support clients in moving toward greater compassion, meaning, and integration in the face of sustained loss.
